Jennifer Aniston chose London for the worldwide launch of her debut fragrance – and appeared in Harrods yesterday to meet the fans desperate to be the first to buy it. Two hundred of them were granted a private audience with Jen where she signed bottles and posed for photos with fans. VOGUE.COM caught up with the actress straight after.
So what are you doing in London!? Why did you choose to launch the perfume here?
It just felt right. Harrods is very elegant, and I guess if it works here, then we’re doing well. And I love coming to London – especially now, when it’s sunny. Yesterday we just took a long walk through the streets, which sometimes I can’t do…but I guess the photographers hadn’t worked out that I was here yet, so I was able to do some shopping, visit some clothes stores and furniture stores and some galleries. The weather, though, is…not a great thing. That might be what stops my fantasies of living here in the end.
How would you describe the perfume?
I wanted it to be a mix of smells I love: that smell when you walk through a beautiful garden that’s full of flowers, not overwhelming like some perfume smells, but more natural. So it’s the smell of the jasmine from my garden, and the smell of summertime, and the ocean, and sun tan lotion. I’m not a big perfume kind of girl, I’ve always loved light scents and oils so it was quite a challenge to do something light and natural enough – but I think we did it!
Anything you definitely didn’t want to include?
Not so much individual scents, but I can’t bear it when people wear overpowering perfume…like you get in an elevator with someone and just know they really mis-gauged it. Men are the worst for it too! I did have a trainer who wore an extremely strong cologne that he thought would mask the – let’s call it the aroma – of his workout as he went from class to class, but it just made it worse.
Have you ever had any disastrous fragrance encounters with men? Like dated someone whose aftershave you just couldn’t stand?
If that had ever happened I would have sorted it out on the first date! I would quite like to create a fragrance for men though – something that I like…
And what are you doing for the rest of the summer?
Working! Then I do press for The Switch, (a romantic comedy also starring Jason Bateman, Juliette Lewis, Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldblum), then I do another movie, then I’m done for a while. So no holidays until then!
Jennifer Aniston the fragrance is available now at Harrods, priced from £23.
